Experience the surf coast on the Great Ocean Road
La Perouse’s favourite Surf Coast experiences:
Lorne Beach Books has become an institution on the Surf Coast since opening in 1999. The owners have amassed 33 years of bookshop ownership first in South Yarra, now Lorne. Due to the quirky and rebellious nature of the owners the bookshop has a very distinct style, with much culture packed into a small space. A MUST VISIT
Visit Tastes Lifestyle on Mountjoy parade. Sandy and David created a Lifestyle Store that has become a world of adventure. Getting away from the homewares mainstream, Tastes Lifestyle works its magic, allowing you to absorb everything that is tasty, tactile, design oriented and fragrant.
Qdos Arts Café in Lorne offers all visitors an experience to remember. Whether you are looking for fabulous coffee, an indulgent breakfast, a lingering lunch, or a luscious cake for afternoon tea. Qdos Arts will delight you, with its relaxed style, set in the great Otway forest, in the winter try our oven warm artisan breads and pastries or in summer a cool long lunch in our shady courtyard. Qdos Cafe is popular all year round with locals and visitors.
Go ride a wave Lorne is a beautiful beach along the must drive "Great Ocean Road" it is a perfect location for teaching surfing with gentle easy waves. There are many great shops, cafe and accommodation just opposite the beach. Enjoy a burger at the Bottle of milk after your surfing lesson.
Play golf at the Lorne Country Club to experience the Otways at its finest. A spectacular nine hole course set in natural bush with sweeping views of the ocean, and for tennis players, six en-tout-cas courts. Visitors are welcome and green fees and tennis court hire fees are low. Golf clubs and tennis racquets are available for hire.
Ride a Horse along the beach with Blazing Saddles who have a stable of over 40 horses including Arabs, Appaloosas, Clydesdale Cross and Stock Horses. They have a variety of saddles including stock, all purpose and dressage. They also supply all the gear you need to ride, just take your cowboy pants!
Visit the wineries WOLSELEY WINES is the Surfcoast’s best kept secret. Situated on the gently sloping hills of Paraparap, just off the Great Ocean Road (inland from Bells Beach, Torquay), Wolseley Wines is a boutique sized vineyard, producing limited quantities of the finest wines.
Sample the local cheese. Just a short drive from the Twelve Apostles and Great Ocean Road, Apostle Whey Cheese is a great spot to sample an unforgettable wedge of country life.
Or visit L'Artisan Cheese in Timboon (my favourite)
Drink some beer at Forrest Brewery. The Former Forrest general store and garage has been resurrected and extended to create a contemporary, casual style dining hall up in the hills, providing a place to stop, take a break, rest and relax in unique natural surrounds.
Whale Watching Whales typically start appearing off the Surf Coast in late autumn and hang around until spring, with sightings becoming more common in recent years; bringing another spectacle to some of Australia’s most spectacular coastline.
